One remembers photographs of her from the time her song "Dominique" was a world-wide hit in 1963: the first pictures showed only her back, later ones let us see her smiling face, tightly framed by a wimple. The first thing that strikes one when meeting Luc Dominique in 1966 is that one immediately recognises the intelligent eyes, twinkling often and easily with a spark of humour. There can be no doubt: this young woman with her short hair-do, her simple but elegant dress, her nylon stockings and high-heeled shoes is the same person as the nun we saw in magazines and in a coast-to-coast Ed Sullivan show three years ago. Asked about her new status she leaves no doubts. Clearly and in very precise language she states that, in entire agreement with her ecclesiastical and religious superiors, she has decided to exert her apostolate among the people and to go out into the world with, which she likes to have close contact. She explains that - as before when she lived in the Dominican nunnery in Fichermont - she is still bound by her vows, that she is still a Dominican, but that like Christ, like priests and monks, she wants to exercise her religious profession among others, especially young people: students and artists. She is very much aware of the fact that many people may at first misunderstand this decision. "Journalists and record dealers will criticise and misunderstand, but may Saint Dominic forgive them for having spread rumours," she says in her first song on this record. "I claim the right to evaluate, to live interdependent with others as a consecrated laic, in shorts or in blue jeans. The Lord is my choice." Sun-bath. Your presence, O Lord, is a sun bath, universal being, luminous power; a sun bath, dynamism of love, diaphanous beauty. Design. The Lord took His pencil to sketch the mountains and the hills, and His joy shadows the rivers. I sing of His love. Prayer. Give me, my God, an empty heart, a poor heart, that receives You while singing and on which Your Spirit engraves Your holiness. Prayer for humour. Give me, my Lord, the sense of humour, a little dash of humour for each day. Teach us to see the joy of life and help us to cultivate beauty. I am not a star. I am not a star. If God makes me a star it is to be a star Himself. My real profession is to be His spokesman. The real star is God. Lady Beauty. Everywhere, everywhere I have met, I have pursued Lady Beauty, pretty Lady. She escorted me to the Absolute: the God of eternity. Song of the hearse. I accompany the dead to life, this is my profession. I conduct people from all over the world to the invisible frontier of the eternal city. Louvain. At the Corner of the river Dyle, crossroad of friendship, I have praised You. At the corner of the Dyle I have sung to You with students from all over the world. Prayer in colours. With the colours of my cheerfulness I come to pray to You today, my God; with the colours of my sadness, my tenderness, my distress. The sheared sheep. I haven't seen anything as funny as the sheared sheep in the meadow. I have created everything, says God, but if you were to smile about it nothing would suit so well as sheared sheep. Seeing You. Seeing You, Lord, immersed in the crowd, immersed in our joys and our worries. The universe seeks its gladness, heaven is being built under our footsteps. | ||||
